Four Winds Boat Shop and Woodcraft
This page is the answer to that question I always get the first time people visit the studio. "What's that other little building?"
Let me introduce you to Plum Creek Sauna and a brief "how to" for those less familiar with the particulars of the traditional Finnish steam bath.
Sauna is pronounced "sow-nah" not "saw-nuh". A wood-fired stove heats the sauna to about 180 degrees. There is a changing room, clean towels and robes, and an abundant supply of water. This is not a sauna like you experience staying in a hotel! If you want a truly "Finnish" experience please contact me to set up a time to enjoy Plum Creek Sauna any time during January.
One of the nicest aspects of going to sauna in winter is the bracing cold on the walk to the building as it heightens your anticipation of the warmth that will envelope you when you reach the interior.
The Finnish word for steam is "Loyly" and a good hot sauna would not be the same without it. It is the essence of the sauna experience. A wood bucket filled with water and a ladle to scoop water over hot stones on top of the wood stove releases a cleansing wave of steam into the room.
Plum Creek Sauna is free for our friends, neighbors and guests of Four Winds Studio to enjoy on New Year's day!
